Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, defeated Due west Virginia Secretarial assistant of State Natalie Tennant (D), John Buckley (50), Phil Hudok (C) and Bob Henry Baber (MP) in the general ballot to fill Jay Rockefeller's U.S. Senate seat. Capito is the outset woman from Westward Virginia to serve in the Senate. Capito was too the first Republican woman ever elected to the U.South. Race groundwork

Shelley Moore Capito

Capito, a 7-term congresswoman, was the start Republican woman ever elected to the U.Southward. House of Representatives from Westward Virginia.[3] The girl of one-time Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr., Capito's moderate voting tape, particularly on fiscal issues, and support for the coal manufacture has helped her appeal to voters in a state that historically swings blue.[25] [26] She has played a key role in West Virginia politics since she was outset elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1996 and has been called "the state'southward most prominent Republican." Until 2011, she was the only Republican member of the W Virginia congressional delegation.[27] Upon the passing of long-term Senator Robert Byrd (D), information technology was widely speculated that Capito would challenge and then-governor Joe Manchin (D) for Byrd's vacant seat. However, Capito decided not to run, saying, "In that location has been enough unnecessary chaos and controversy surrounding the vacancy in the U.S. Senate. Voting trends in West Virginia

Historically, W Virginia has swayed Democrat, particularly at the country level. Nevertheless, information technology is outset to grow more conservative, with George W. Nearly vulnerable seats

The Fiscal Times compiled a listing of the vii virtually vulnerable Senate seats up for ballot in 2014. The seven included in the list were: Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia. Going into the 2014 election, all vii seats were held by Democrats.[46]

Coal

In May 2013, she introduced the Coal Jobs Protection Act of 2013. The bill would require the Environmental Protection Agency to base a determination on blessing a new or renewed permit covering discharges from a structure only on regulations issued by the permitting authority.[49] [fifty] Tennant released a campaign ad that was called "one of the about anti-Obama ads of the election." In it, she turned off the lights of the White House afterwards saying, "You and I know information technology's our hard working Westward Virginia coal miners that power America. I'll make sure President Obama gets the message."[51] [36] [37]

Tennant worked to distance herself from President Obama and his policies, while Capito attempted to portray Tennant as just some other "rubber postage" for the Obama assistants and its allies. The Capito camp claimed Tennant would vote for Harry Reid (D) for Senate majority leader.[52] [53] Tennant was confronted about her support for Obama by a disgruntled voter at one of her entrada events. Tackett, interjected maxim, "considering she supports most of his policies." Tennant campaign spokeswoman Jenny Donohue later on released a statement, saying, "The general misspoke.
